600 Schools Over Time

Between 1948 and 1967, the New York City Board of Education’s “600” program grew from a handful of schools into a network that reached day schools, hospitals, residential institutions, and detention and remand centers, in the five boroughs and beyond. This map shows 51 of those sites by the year each opened or first appears in the records. Drag the slider or press Play to watch the program expand, and click any dot for its address, school type, and notes.

Sources: compiled from Board of Education annual reports on the “600” schools, published studies, and other archival records. Dates and some locations are approximate; this map is a work in progress.
